The Final Days In Scarborough

It's hard to believe our final week in Yorkshire is about to come to a close. Our third week has been filled with beautiful August weather, long walks, weeding, lots of cleaning, tea, and wonderful conversation with everyone here.

Last Sunday Julie and I headed out into the sunny yet blustery day for a long stroll and picnic along the way. So many farmers were out combining and harvesting grain. The maize or corn is far from ready, but the golden fields of wheat, barley, etc are certainly ready for harvest. Julie and I enjoyed watching the combines go as well as waving to the haulers as they drove the grain wagons to and from the field. The last leg of our walk was along a grassy public footpath. It was nice to stroll through the quiet countryside.

Monday through Friday were days filled with cleaning the kitchens, wiping down the woodwork, weeding, planting some flowers and cabbage and preparing rooms for B&B guests. Friday we made supper for our hosts, Breakfast for Supper! We made pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon and sausages. It was quite the 'American' experience!

We've enjoyed our three weeks in the beautiful countryside of Yorkshire! We've learned loads, enjoyed the beautiful scenery and landscape, helped with so many different projects and had wonderful conversation and chats during our stay here. We are so grateful for our hosts for having us, teaching us the ropes for catering and serving and sharing amazing, tasty food with us! Now it's time to start the last month of our adventure!  We are off to Edinburgh first, then Isle of Jersey, Devon once again and finally Ireland! We hope you continue to come along with us on our fantastic adventures!

We Went To Keswick!

A few months ago, a friend from Salzburg International Christian Church told us that visiting the Lake District, specifically Keswick, was a must during our time in England. Dana and I discussed this many times and thought that it might not be possible. We had almost given up as public transportation was outrageously expensive and took way too long! Then we looked into renting a car and it was totally feasible! So we loaded up and rented a car!!!

We stopped along the way to take in the sights!

Lunchtime in Whitby - home of the abbey in Dracula

We love all the stone walls!

We made it to Keswick, enjoyed a night of car camping, and then walked around Derwentwater! We loved seeing the mountains, known as fells, and it made us miss Austria!

Following the instructions of our friend, and the handy map she drew in Dana's planner, we stopped in Grange of Borrowdale for tea and scones! We had explicit instructions to frequent a particular cafe that serves rum butter, the only place in England that still does! We were thankful for this nice treat halfway through the walk and for our friend's wise recommendation!

After our walk, we checked out Keswick and then headed to the edge of the lake to have a picnic. We did some exercises first and then started making a salad picnic, with sheep for our companions!

Unfortunately, the rain started coming down so we continued our supper in the car!

We got up nice and early the next day to slowly make it way back to Scarborough. We stopped at a few places...
Asda, owned by Wal-Mart for toilet break and donuts!

Redcar, a small seaside village, to enjoy said donuts.

Another seaside village!

It was a brilliant adventure and we are so grateful we had the opportunity to go! And Dana did a wonderful job driving on the left side of the road! So super!
